2007 Boston Baked Beans Take The Cup

By Lovell Hockey, 01/30/20, 1:45PM EST

The BBB 2007 team entered the 2020 Cup in Buffalo this year with a very big chip on its shoulder.  Despite going 3-1-0 the past two years, they did not qualify for the playoffs. They were motivated to go all the way this year.

The team started off quickly in their first game, taking a 3-0 lead over a very skilled team from Peterborough, ON. However, momentum shifted significantly and the BBB team found themselves down 4-3 in the third period and needing to claw their way back for a 4-4 tie. Hungry for a win, they started strong from the opening whistle of game 2 and played a complete game to the final buzzer. Virtua was totally outmatched by BBB’s determination, grit and speed, and the BBB team picked up a 4-0 win. Carrying the momentum from the night before, the boys come out flying and won both games on Saturday, beating Cambridge, ON 5-2 and the Philadelphia Hockey Club 5-0.

Their 3-0-1 performance in the preliminary rounds earned the 2007 BBB team a spot in the quarterfinals. After playing a game the night before at 8:45 pm, the boys did not have much time to rest for a very tough match up against CJR at 7:30 am on Sunday morning.  Surprisingly, the boys came out flying, carried the play, and went up 1-0. After CJR tied up the game 1-1 mid-first period, the team hit a wall on all fronts. They were playing horrible defense, could not generate any offense, and the boys were spending too much time in the penalty box. With five minutes left in the second, the team found themselves down 4-1. With 3:51 to go in the second period, they found some life and scored a goal to make it 4-2. 1 minute and 50 seconds later they were able to strike again to make it 4-3 going into the third.  Coming out in the third they were carrying all of the momentum - until, with 10 minutes remaining, one of their key players was ejected from the game. The team rallied around their missing teammate, rose to the challenge, and tied the game with 8:55 to go in the third.  Feeding off of this emotion, they struck again quickly and scored the game winner with 6:37 left, finishing with a 5-4 win.

Working with the energy from a very emotional win against CJR, the boys never looked back.  The 2007 BBB’s beat Huron 5-2 in the semis. At this point, the boys could taste the Cup and knew if they played one more hard game they would win it all.  Maintaining their strong momentum, the team beat the Mississauga Senators 6-2 to win the 2020 Buffalo Cup.
